What are the differences between white gold, platinum and silver?

While they may look similar at first glance, white gold, platinum and silver are actually very different metals with different characteristics. White gold has a warm undertone and will fade to yellow over time. Silver and platinum are both naturally white in tone, but platinum has a much brighter shine.

Silver is the softest metal of the three, and is alloyed with a small amount of other metals to make it stronger. Next comes gold, which is quite soft and needs to be mixed with other metals to make it suitable for fine jewellery. Platinum is the hardest of all, and can be used in its near pure form.

While it’s a popular choice for everyday wear, silver is prone to tarnishing so you’ll need to give it a good polish every now and again. White gold is more durable than silver but we do recommend having it re-plated with rhodium on a regular basis to maintain its brightness and its cool white colour. Finally, platinum is heavier and denser than gold, making it a durable choice for your jewellery.
