This stone is a part of the Amethyst family. It occurs in wide variety ranging from light Pinkish violet to a deep purple. Ancient Egyptians used it as a gem stone.
Onyx is formed of bands of chalcedony in alternating colors. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color. Commonly, specimens of onyx contain bands of black and/or white.
The name "iolite" comes from the Greek word for violet. Iolite varies in color from sapphire blue to blue violet to yellowish gray to light blue as the light angle changes.
